The South Sioux City Fire Department is a highly committed, full service, combination fire department, providing "All Hazard Response" to this community of more than 15,000 people 24 hours a day / 365 days a year.  All operations take place from Station 1 at 1501 Dakota Ave, where these crews will respond to over 1500 calls for service by the end of 2024, 84 percent of those calls are Emergency Medical Responses.

The South Sioux City Fire Department has 1 paid Chief officer. The 9 full-time Firefighters are represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Union Local 644. Daily staffing consists of 1-Captain, 1-Firefighter/Paramedic and 1-Firefighter assigned to one of our three shifts - A, B, or C shift and work a 3/4 Kelly System which means the firefighters work a day on/off for 3 days and then get 4 days off. To help supplement staffing, the South Sioux City Fire Department has both part-time Firefighters and Volunteer Firefighters that will respond when an "All-Call" is issued when more manpower is needed.  Daily workflow for the firefighters in the community includes but is not limited to responding to emergency incidents, rig and gear checks, fire and EMS training, performing fire safety education, providing first-aid training to community groups, and rental inspections.   The firefighters are responsible for all station maintenance and upkeep.  All firefighters when on duty, are required to complete 1-hour physical fitness conditioning during the 24-hour workday.

Mutual Aid agreements are in place with the Dakota City Fire Department, Seargent Bluff Fire Department and Sioux City Fire Department for South Sioux Fire Department to offer assistance to or gain assistance on larger more complex incidents or when multiple calls for service comes in at one time. These agreements are in place to assure that when there is an emergency in the community, help will be responding.

Nothing is more important to the South Sioux City Firefighters than to meet your needs when the emergency tones drop. Every citizen in the community should expect to receive a rapid and professional response from the South Sioux City Fire Department for all fire and emergency medical calls for service.  It is the goal of the South Sioux City Fire Department to be enroute to the emergency in 60 sec or less from the time the station or unit is notified and have a drive time response, being on scene in 4 minutes or less 90 percent of the time. These times are closely monitored to see if changes need to be put in place to ensure a quicker and more efficient response as the city grows.
